MedTech Compass demo cases: illustrative use cases and market scores

Short, illustrative examples of how medical device teams use MedTech Compass market attractiveness scoring to work through common launch decisions — the question, the score breakdown, and the decision that followed. Scenarios are illustrative composites built from typical scoring patterns.

Illustrative MedTech Compass use cases

Each card shows the question a team was answering, the market attractiveness score MedTech Compass produced, and the decision that followed. Scenarios are illustrative composites built from typical scoring patterns.

Class II SaMD start-up

United States

78Overall

Should we launch in the US first, or take the shorter European route while we build clinical evidence?

Regulatory82
Reimbursement64
Competition71

Scoring showed a viable 510(k) route with an existing predicate, but a weak near-term payment picture. The team launched in the US as a self-pay adjunct while building the coding case, instead of waiting on EU MDR Rule 11 classification work.

Orthopaedic implant scale-up

Germany and the Netherlands

71Overall

Which two European markets should follow our CE mark, given a fixed launch budget?

Regulatory68
Reimbursement79
Competition55

Germany scored highest on payment and procurement volume but lowest on competitive density. Sequencing Germany first for reference accounts and the Netherlands second for a faster tender cycle replaced an earlier plan built on existing distributor relationships.

IVD diagnostics manufacturer

United Kingdom

63Overall

Is the UK worth a separate route now, or should we fold it into a later wave?

Regulatory59
Reimbursement66
Competition74

UKCA marking plus a UK Responsible Person added cost that the near-term volume did not justify on its own. The UK moved into wave two, and the freed budget went to a higher-scoring market with an active tender window.

Digital therapeutics team

Germany (DiGA)

84Overall

Where can we generate reimbursed revenue fastest with the evidence we already hold?

Regulatory76
Reimbursement91
Competition69

A structured reimbursement pathway for digital health scored far above alternatives. The team targeted that route first and used the resulting real-world data to strengthen a later US payer conversation.

How these scores are produced

Every score comes from the same model: each market is assessed on regulatory route, reimbursement and payment forecasting, procurement, competitive density and adoption readiness, then combined with weights the team sets. The mechanics are described in full in how MedTech Compass works.

The regulatory dimension usually moves the ranking most. For the underlying routes, see the global FDA pathways guide and the EU MDR and UKCA guide.

What changes when scoring replaces intuition

In each scenario above, the scored comparison overturned a plan built on familiarity — an existing distributor, a home market, or the country a founder knew best. That is the practical value of medical device market intelligence: it makes the trade-off between regulatory speed and payment durability explicit before the budget is committed.

  • A defensible shortlist you can show a board or investor, with the evidence behind each score
  • Explicit trade-offs between regulatory burden, payment timelines and competitive density
  • A launch sequence where evidence from the first market supports the next
  • Weights that reflect your strategy instead of a generic country index

Frequently asked questions

Are these real customer results?
No. Every scenario on this page is an illustrative demo case. The devices, companies and numbers are composites built from typical scoring patterns so you can see how a MedTech Compass readout is structured and how it changes a decision. They should not be read as guaranteed outcomes.
How is the overall attractiveness score calculated?
Each market is scored on several dimensions — regulatory route and burden, reimbursement and payment forecasting, procurement and distribution, competitive density, and clinical adoption readiness. Those dimension scores are combined using weights you set, so a reimbursement-sensitive team and an evidence-sensitive team can get different rankings from the same underlying data.
Can I change the weights for my own strategy?
Yes. Custom weights are the point. A cash-constrained start-up usually weights speed to first revenue and regulatory burden heavily, while a scale-up preparing a Series C may weight market size and reimbursement durability more. Compass recalculates the ranking immediately when weights change.
What would my own demo case look like?
A scored comparison of the markets you care about, the dimension breakdown behind each score, the evidence links supporting each judgement, and an executive-ready summary you can take into a board or investor conversation. Book a live demo and we can run your device through the model.
